Tablet

The exact model that I got started with is no longer available, however, this model is the current equivalent, in the same approximate price point. If this is still out of your budget, you can start with just about any tablet. Not all are created equal! Make sure to do your research and read the reviews.

Digital Drawing Pen/Pencil

When it comes to your digital drawing pencil or stylus, DEFINITELY read the reviews!! If you are using an apple product I highly recommend the apple pencil. Double check your model, as gen 1 and gen 2 only work on certain iPad models. I promise you that I did NOT start with the apple pencil, I wish that I was able too, but alas it was outside my budget. I started off with one that I HATED. I should have read the reviews. I quickly replaced that one with this one. Very affordable and works great. Mine is several years old and I still use it. The only con I have found is if you are using Procreate. Procreate will only recognize pressure sensitivity with an apple pencil :( it was designed that way intentionally.

Software

When I started, I chose Procreate. It was really affordable, had no recurring subscription costs...(looking at you photoshop) and was an all around great place to start. I still use procreate for a lot (most) of my work, but I am starting to use several from the creative cloud. There are also quite a few free apps out there as well and that is perfectly fine! Just get started! I waited too long to start, if I could go back in time I would tell myself to stop being a baby and just start.
